What Do You Do?
What Do You Do?
I love the Chevrolet truck commercial. The one where they are having a block party and one neighbor asks the new guy, “What do you do?” He does this life-flashes-before-his-eyes thing and has trouble answering the question. He doesn’t say, “I sell houses” or “I’m a cop” or “I’m a nurse”…you get my point. If you haven’t seen the commercial, you can find it on You Tube. It will come right up if you go to You Tube and search Chevrolet what do you do or click on the link I've provided.
In my youth, I would answer that exact question in a matter of fact manner. I’m a wrestler. I’m a DJ. I’m a soldier. I’m a husband. I’m a cop. I’m a Dad. I’m a Realtor. At some point, you grow up a little more and wonder…Who am I? That’s why I love the commercial.
Sudden thought! Do men and women look at this the same way? I’m looking forward to some feedback on that point!
As I matured, I found myself hesitating when I answer that question. What do you do Vic? I help people accomplish their goals regarding where they want to live. I’m a writer. Not yet an author, but I hope to change that. I’m an avid reader. I’m a good friend. I’m an outdoorsman. I’m an archer. I’m a man of faith. Who AM I? …I’m Vic!
Are you comfortable in your own skin? Are you doing everything you want to do? I realized last month I wasn’t. I sold a beautiful condo in Long Beach during the weeks leading up to the Long Beach Grand Prix. One day, I got detoured through downtown, down the straightaway and ON the beach. It felt like a scene from a Hollywood comedy. I was actually grinning the entire time. I’ve always meant to go to the Grand Prix. I still haven’t gone. I need to change that.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is there too. THAT is absolutely something I’ve always meant to do. It’s open every day of the year except Christmas and the Grand Prix race days. I’m pleased to tell you I went to the aquarium for the first time two weeks ago. It was amazing! It was four hours of beauty…and air conditioning! It was a perfect get-away.
Is there a little indulgence you have always meant to do? Visit Yellowstone? Get a tattoo? Have a party around a firepit at the beach? I want you to do something for yourself; just do it. Over the next couple of days, figure out exactly how you are going to do that one thing you have always meant to do. I would absolutely love it if you tell me; what do you do!
